Running off the weight



HAMPTON, Va. — Watch Nina Stickles push herself through a 6-mile training session along Chesapeake Avenue in Hampton, Va., and it’s hard to believe she was ever anything but a runner.
Ditto for the energy she shows on the job at Hampton’s Sentara Center for Fitness & Health, where she routinely takes the stairs two at a time while going between the exercise floor and her office.
Hidden behind a framed picture on Stickles’ desk, however, is a secret but regularly perused portrait that tells a far different story. Just six years ago, the 5-foot-1 Hampton woman weighed in at 180 pounds—and cardiovascular exercise of any kind wasn’t on her agenda.
“I couldn’t even have completed the Presidential Fitness Test mile,” Stickles said, shaking her head in disbelief. “I wouldn’t have run if someone was chasing me.”
Not long after that picture was taken, however, the recently married Ferguson High School grad made a bold decision.

Stepping out her front door one January day, she started to walk down Chesapeake Avenue. Five minutes later, she says, she had to stop. But she returned the next day and walked farther almost every time she went out.
Soon her strolls included short sprints between the street signs. A couple of months later, she picked up the pace even more, she says. By June, she’d shed 50 pounds — and that loss was followed by 10 more pounds over the summer.
‘I had to get healthy’
Today, Stickles follows an even more demanding regime, running as much as 19 miles a week during the hard-earned time she’s learned to carve out from a full work-week and the job of caring for her family.
But she still looks back on her first six months of running as a milestone challenge — one that transformed not only her body but also her life.
“I had to get healthy — not only for myself but because I wanted to start a family,” the 30-year-old runner said.
“And I was afraid if I waited until after I was pregnant my 180 pounds would balloon into 230.”
Stickles didn’t start off life as a short, fat person.
She took up gymnastics in elementary school and pursued it ardently for years, learning to look at herself as an athlete. But the once-slim figure she gained from her workouts back then began to disappear not long after she entered college.
“When I came home after my first year, people looked at me and wondered what had happened,” she recalls. “Instead of the freshman 10 pounds, I gained the freshman 25 — and I just kept gaining weight in a slow, gradual process.”
Bad eating habits may have contributed the most to her increasingly bulky body. “I thought you could eat a box of macaroni and cheese every night — and I did,” Stickles says.
But even after graduating from college and packing on more than 50 pounds, she couldn’t get a handle on an increasingly visible problem.
“I still exercised by lifting. But it was all strength stuff and no cardio,” she confesses. “I was 180 pounds of strong fat.”
Guidance and encouragement
Not until after Stickles married in 2002 did she really begin to feel the weight of the unfamiliar person she saw in her family pictures. Then her mother brought in a newspaper story about a middle-aged woman who had gone from fat to firm by taking up running.
“I told her, ‘If she can do it, you can do it,’ ” Cindy Kruziak said. “And she took it upon herself to make it happen.”
That’s when her daughter made the decision to walk until she could run — and then keep on running after that.
“My husband loved me heavy. And he’s loved me thin. But I wasn’t happy about all that weight,” Stickles said. “When I looked at those pictures, it wasn’t who I wanted to be.”
As determined as the young woman felt, she couldn’t have dropped so much weight without the dietary guidance she got from Weight Watchers and the encouragement she got from her friends and family.

Combined with her increasing mileage, that support helped Stickles see a difference nearly every time she stepped on a scale. By June, she had lost a weekly average of nearly 2 pounds.
But despite the excitement and pride she brought to many of her Weight Watchers meetings, she also ran into times when she felt so tired or lazy that she found herself looking for excuses to skip a workout.
“It’s always harder to go back to square one than to go forward to square four or five,” she said. “So you just have get out there and push.”
After her daughter, Katelynn, was born in late 2005, it took the same kind of determination and persistence for Stickles not only to regain her form but also to raise her ambitions as a runner.

'Off-Label' Drug Use Common Among Athletes



New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, who was recently outed by a New York tabloid for using Viagra to increase his performance on the field, is among many professional athletes who make unorthodox use of pharmaceutical drugs.

Experts believe athletes and performers use a strange and alarming array of methods to keep themselves competitive in two of the most competitive careers in America, often at their own peril.
Although it may seem counterintuitive, Viagra -- which Major League Baseball does not prohibit -- works by relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow through the body.
Dr. Robert Dimeff, president of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, says that doctors first became aware of athletes' "off-label" use of drugs like Viagra a few years back, when cyclists, who "love to experiment with weird performance-enhancing stuff anyway," reported that it helped improve performance.
Dimeff says he presumes that their improvement at high altitudes is due to improved oxygenation of mild or "subclinical" pulmonary edema and inefficiency.
Dimeff also says that while large-scale, double-blind studies are necessary to confirm these reports, when they do not exist, doctors must rely on small studies and anecdotal evidence. And, of course, their pharmacological training.
A study presented in 2006 at an American College of Sports Medicine conference indicated that the potent ingredients in Viagra and Cialis, which treat erectile dysfunction, did seem to improve lung function by increasing oxygenation of the blood to the lungs.

Human Growth Hormone (hGH)
Sylvester Stallone, on the other hand, says he prefers to use human growth hormone to keep his 61-year-old self looking tight.
The muscly actor told "Today's" Matt Lauer five months ago that he does indeed take the substance and has no qualms about saying so.

Stallone, who pleaded guilty to possession after Australian airport officials last year found 48 vials of human growth hormone in his luggage, emphasized that his physique is buff because of years and years of training.
The hormones serve only as enhancement to an already strong body, he said.
Human growth hormone, he said "really takes off the wear and tear that your body takes."

Dimeff says that if there were a shred of evidence that the hormone could improve eyesight, he'd be taking it himself. There is not.

But it is generally accepted in the medical community that the growth hormone can increase metabolism and protein synthesis, which means that with exercise, one can potentially grow leaner. He qualifies his comments, however, by emphasizing the significance of the placebo effect.
Because the word "placebo" has come to mean, at least in layman's terms, that whatever forces at work are not "real," Dimeff dislikes using the term.
But in most every study the placebo effect is so significant that it accounts for a 30 percent improvement in any given condition. "Just thinking you are taking something can make you feel better, but it is very real, very profound," he says.
That said, Dimeff says human growth hormone does accelerate the body's recovery from strenuous exercise as well as increase protein growth.

And although there have been reports of joint pain and increased risk of diabetes associated with its use, Dimeff says that unlike steroids, which linger in body, the growth hormone stays for no longer than nine hours. Therefore, he says, the risk of side effects is minimal.

But the hormone is very expensive. Bodybuilders who want an extra boost may find that Preparation H, the hemorrhoid-fighter with the distinctive metallic odor, fits better into their budgets.
For competitors who want to target problem areas before a big contest, the anti-inflammatory shrinks tissue temporarily. Trouble can come when old faithful is used regularly for extended periods of time, doctors say.
Darrell S. Rigel, clinical professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center, warns that because it works by constricting blood vessels, Preparation H may raise one's blood pressure.

'Soda-Doping' With Baking Soda
Baking soda is another athlete's underground secret. Runners have ingested baking soda before races for decades -- it's called "soda-doping."
Enthusiasts compare it to carbohydrate loading before a race.

But Ronald W. Deitrick, fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, recently told members at their annual conference that although his studies show that giving runners baking soda in capsule form did seem to improve the performance of middle distance runners -- and with few side effects (diarrhea being the worst case scenario) -- he believes its use should be banned.
"I think it violates the spirit of fair play," he told the group.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views the heart as the master of the body and the emperor of the organ networks. It generates chi, the vital energy of the body, and thus is the root of all life1. Without a healthy heart, the body is fragile and stale. While many of us know that heart disease is rampant in the United States, we remain largely unaware of a powerful tool in its prevention: green tea. The heart protective effects of green tea can be attributed mainly to its antioxidant and anti-obesity properties, while other mechanisms play supporting roles. Each of these mechanisms will be discussed below in terms of TCM as well as Western medicine.First, the antioxidant properties of green tea can be traced to its polyphenols, defined simply as groups of chemical substances in a plant. These polyphenols act as little superheros, taking the place of cells in danger of becoming oxidized and facing the oxidation themselves. In this way, they prevent the formation of free radicals - highly reactive atoms that can damage heart cells and, in TCM, leave cells incapable of generating chi2. Research at the Graduate School of Medicine in Kyoto, Japan confirmed that green tea polyphenols can protect a heart from oxidative stress, as well as maintain good left ventricular function after ischemic arrest (restriction in the heart's blood supply) and reperfusion (tissue damage caused when the blood supply returns)3. A study at Aichi Medical University in Japan similarly concluded that green tea is useful to ischemia-reperfusion hearts due to its ability to fight free radicals;4 while research at the University of Padova in Italy found that green tea extract prevented hypertension and target organ damage induced in rats, likely by scavenging free radicals.5 There are four primary polyphenols in green tea and they are often collectively referred to as catechins, the most publicized of which is Epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG. At Chungbuk National University in Cheongju, Korea, research suggests that EGCG prevents the development of left ventricular concentric hypertrophy (pathological thickening of the ventricle walls) due to high blood pressure and may be useful in preventing cardiac remodeling (changes in size, shape or function of the heart) in patients with diseases that strain the heart muscle.6 Furthermore, a 2004 review study at Complutense University of Connecticut11 further confirm green tea's lipid-lowering capabilities. In addition, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study at the University of Medicine in Berlin confirmed that EGCG alone has the potential to increase fat oxidation in men and may thereby contribute to the anti-obesity effects of green tea.12 In relation to thermogenesis (heat production that leads to increased metabolism), green tea, by containing both catechins and caffeine, may promote thermogenesis through inhibition of certain enzymes (catechol O-methyl-transferase and phosphodiesterase). In addition, tea catechins have anti-angiogenic (enlarging of blood vessels) properties that may prevent the development of excess weight.13 In TCM, weight loss involves limiting salty and sweet foods and increasing bitter and pungent foods. Green tea, a bitter food, is recommended.14

These two health-giving properties of green tea -- antioxidant activity and weight loss promotion -- combine to additionally protect the heart in those with diabetes, as hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress has been proposed as a cause of many complications of diabetes including cardiac dysfunction. Research at the University of Madras found that green tea extract ameliorates oxidative stress in the aorta and the heart of diabetic rats given streptozotocin (a chemical that is toxic to the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas). This suggests that green tea may be useful in the reversal of oxidative stress-induced cardiac dysfunction in diabetics.15 Another study at the University of Madras found that green tea improves the quality of heart collagen, also possibly therapeutic in the treatment of cardiovascular complications of diabetes.16

Another mechanism by which green tea protects the heart is quelling inflammation. London, Feb 16: Scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital have identified two common genetic variants associated with increased risk of hypertension - a significant risk factor for heart attack, stroke and kidney failure.
The variants are located on two genes called NPPA and NPPB, which control proteins that relax blood vessels and help the excretion of dietary sodium Both genes are involved in the production of atrial and B-type natriuretic peptides (ANP and BNP).
"It''s well known that hypertension can run in families, and a few rare genetic syndromes that raise blood pressure have been identified," Nature magazine quoted Dr Christopher Newton-Cheh, MPH of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Centre for Human Genetic Research and Cardiovascular Research Centre, first author, as saying.
"But the common genetic basis for the type of hypertension that affects a billion individuals around the world has been very difficult to establish," he added.
During the study, the researchers examined the genetic data from almost 30,000 individuals.
They first screened 1,700 participants in the Framingham Heart Study for 13 common variations - called single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) - in the NPPA and NPPB genes, looking for any correlation with levels of ANP and BNP.

The variants associated with changes in natriuretic peptide levels were then tested in the same individuals for any association with blood pressure levels.
One variant, present in almost 90 percent of the population, was found to be associated with a 20 percent reduction of ANP levels and an 18 percent greater incidence of hypertension.
The other variant had a similar, although less pronounced, effect on ANP levels and blood pressure.
"Natriuretic peptides are known to be produced by the heart when it is stressed, and screening for peptide levels is widely used to diagnose heart failure, a condition in which they are sharply elevated," said senior author Thomas Wang, MD, of the MGH Cardiology Division.

It''s currently premature to advocate screening natriuretic peptide levels or gene variants to diagnose hypertension risk, but someday it may be possible to treat natriuretic-peptide-deficient individuals with therapies that restore normal levels and reduce risk," he added.

Pill May Cure Alcoholism



Each year, alcoholism kills over 30,000 people and many more people struggle with the side effects of alcohol abuse.
Researchers at the University of Virginia Health System have reported that a drug can lead to a reduction in heavy drinking. Topiramate is a drug currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration that is used to treat seizures and migraine headaches.
Bankole Johnson, chairman of psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences at Virginia, says,"Alcoholism is a treatable disease. Topiramate not only reduces the symptoms of the desire for heavy drinking, but also improves the physical and psychological health of the people who take it."
Male and female diagnosed alcoholics were involved in a 14-week nationwide clinical study. The drug was found to be more effective than a placebo at reducing cravings for alcohol. It also worked to lower liver enzymes, cholesterol, body mass index and blood pressure. Topiramate could possibly lower the risk of cirrhosis, which is the scarring of the liver and the number one cause of death in heavy drinkers.
Patients involved in the study and taking Topiramate experienced a 54 percent decline in their cravings and obsessive thoughts about alcohol. To compare, the placebo group only showed a 33 percent reduction.
There were some side effects reported, such as a numbness or tingling sensation, altered taste, weight loss leading to anorexia, and difficulty in concentrating.
That would be great if this pill could treat alcoholism and reduce the cravings. But a few people in the test group actually stopped taking the pill because they were uncomfortable with the side effects. So that could be one drawback to getting an alcohol abuser one step closer to their recovery. I also think that people taking this drug to help their alcoholism

should also take some form of rehabilitation class so they don't go into relapse if something triggers their desires again.

Fast Food Outlets Linked to Increased Risk of Stroke



Would you like a stroke with your cheeseburger? Scientists have found that your chances of having a stroke may actually be related to how many Burger Kings and KFCs are operating in your town. Researchers at the University of Michigan have discovered that the risk of stroke increases with the preponderance of fast-food restaurants in a neighborhood.
In the recently published study, Texas residents with the highest number of fast-food restaurants had a 13% higher relative risk of suffering strokes than those living in areas with the lowest number of restaurants. Each additional McDonalds, Jack in the Box or Taco Bell also increased the risk of stroke by 1%.

The correlation between stroke rates and fast food emerged from an investigation of strokes in Nueces County, Texas; researchers recorded all 1,247 strokes that occurred in the county between 2000 and mid-2003. The region is home to Corpus Christi, a city that has 280,000 people and 262 fast food restaurants. The scientists split the city into 64 neighborhoods with roughly the same population, based on available census data. The study was adjusted to account for variations in local population due to factors such as age, race and income. The research results showed that people living in neighborhoods with an average of 33 fast food restaurants suffered 13% more strokes than people who lived near just a dozen fast food joints.

Joanne Murphy, Medical Research Liaison officer at the British Stroke Association remarked: “Whilst this is the first time we have seen the direct correlation between fast food outlets and risk of stroke, it isn’t surprising. We have known for sometime that food high in saturated fat and salt, which is often the case with fast food, contributes to high blood pressure and obesity which are both risk factors for stroke.”

Burger Prohibition?
However, this research does not necessarily mean that greasy burgers, french fries and fried chicken cause stroke, says Lewis Morgenstern, an epidemiologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, who presented the study at the International Stroke Conference in San Diego, California. “The data shows a true association,” Morgenstern explains. “What we don’t know is whether fast food actually increased the risk because of its contents, or whether fast-food restaurants are a marker of unhealthy neighborhoods. Rather, fast food could possibly be an indicator for other factors that lead to poor health, such as lack of exercise or poor air quality.”
Dr. Morgenstern said the association between fast-food restaurants and stroke risk warrants much more study, and there are still many unanswered questions. “We need to start unraveling why these particular communities have higher stroke risks,” he said. “Is it direct consumption of fast food? Is it the lack of more healthy options? Is there something completely different in these neighborhoods that is associated with poor health?

Previous research has found links between fast-food, diabetes and obesity, motivating consumer groups to push for laws such as July’s moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in some Los Angeles neighborhoods. So often poor and minority neighborhoods are situated in food desserts, districts with little or no access to fresh healthy food, but often served by an excess of fast food restaurants. And though it is not really surprising news, it seems that fast food really can make you sick.

Mumbai terrorists use anabolic steroids, among other drugs, in deadly raids



the story that the Mumbai (India) terrorists coughed up illicit street drugs including LSD, cocaine, and apparently anabolic steroids. The Mirror notes that it is not uncommon for training terrorists to incorporate steroids in their workouts.

The Mumbai terrorists may have pumped themselves full of drugs to keep going during

their murderous three-day rampage.
Indian police sources say tests on the bodies of dead Islamic fanatics revealed traces of stimulant drugs.
One said: “We found injections containing traces of cocaine and LSD left behind by the terrorists and later found drugs in their blood.
“There was also evidence of steroids, which isn’t uncommon in terrorists. These men were all toned, suggesting they had been doing some heavy training for the attacks
Cocaine is a 'stimulant'' drug that improves endurance and increases vigor with short term use.
“This explains why they managed to battle the commandos for over 50 hours with no food or sleep.”
The source said one gunman is thought to have injected himself with large doses of stimulant so he could keep on fighting after he was seriously wounded.

Doctors ordered the patient to quit steroids and start taking antibiotics. Two months later, the acne was gone. So was the muscle. Only gruesome scarring remained -- and as his doctors wrote last week in the Lancet, that "is likely to remain with the young man for the rest of his life."
